The Trefl company was founded in 1985 and has since become a leading manufacturer of board games in Poland and one of the largest puzzle manufacturers in Europe.

The production of puzzles was not originally on the plan of Trefl founder Kazimierz Wierzbicki. A mathematics teacher by training, he first worked successfully as a basketball coach for several years before seeing a jigsaw puzzle for the first time during a competitive trip through Western Europe in the 1980s. He decided to spread this game in Poland as well, but machines for cutting out pieces did not yet exist there. Together with his brother he developed and built his own constructions in the beginning and produced the first puzzles in a workshop in a garage. Despite the political difficulties in Poland in the 1990s, Wierzbicki managed to continue building and expanding his company with a lot of creativity and perseverance. He has always been guided by his core values: Family Cohesion, Respect, Development and Education.

Now, more than 30 million games and puzzles are produced annually in Gdynia, in the north of Poland, and sold from there to 60 countries worldwide. Trefl products are almost completely biodegradable and compostable.

In finding the name and designing the Trefl logo, Wierzbicki drew inspiration from traditional playing cards: For him, the color cross bears a resemblance to puzzle pieces and was accordingly the appropriate symbol for his small company. The name is based on the French word for the color cross: "Trèfle". Trefl already has a branch in Bremen to consolidate its position in the puzzle and board game market in Germany as well.
