The main characters are the title character Asterix, his friend Obelix, his dog Dog Dogmatix and other inhabitants of a small village in Gaul of the time around 50 B.C. At that time, the Romans under Julius Caesar had occupied all of Gaul. "Only a small village full of indomitable Gauls does not stop resisting the invader" it is said. What is meant is the Gallic village of Asterix, located on the coast of what is now Brittany in northwestern France. The inhabitants receive superhuman strength through a magic potion. With it, they can always defend themselves against the Romans and other enemies.
