Peter Pan is one of the best-known and most beloved characters from children’s literature. Created by James Matthew Barrie (Scotland 1860-1937) he made his debut 1904 in a chapter of the novel “The Little White Bird”. The very same year, Peter Pan formed the basis of the successful theatrical play “Peter and Wendy”. The famous book on Peter Pan was written in 1911.
- The stage adaptation of 1949 with Jean Arthur as Peter Pan and Boris Karloff as Hook is considered to be the best stage production ever.
- In 1954 a musical version of Peter Pan successfully entered the stage.
- 1924 J.M. Barrie gives the Laskey Company permission to produce a silent film. The first feature film received great critical praise.
- The animated film by Disney (1953) is the best-known film adaptation, continued in 2002 by “Return to Never Land”.
- Director Steven Spielberg told the story of a grown-up Peter Pan in „Hook“ (1991).
- 1990 – 1991 Fox produced 64 episodes of their animated TV series “Peter Pan and the Pirates”.
In spring 2004 the latest feature film, a live action fantasy adventure by Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures in cooperation with Revolution Studios & Red Wagon Production entered the silver screens. Producers are Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher (“Stuart Little” and “Stuart Little 2”). Director is P.J. Hogan. Ludivine Sagnier acts as Tinkerbell, Jason Isaacs plays Captain Hook and Jeremy Sumpter Peter Pan. For the very first time Peter Pan is portrayed by a boy. “Industrial Lights & Magic” were responsible for special effects and computer-aided animation.
